Tips for a healthy pregnancy

Taking vitamins

Vitamin B11, also known as folic acid, is an important vitamin in preventing abnormalities, such as a cleft lip or spina bifida. Your child also needs vitamin D for strong bones. These important vitamins are often not sufficiently present in our diet. That is why we recommend you start taking these vitamins, preferably from a month before you want to become pregnant. Take 400 micrograms of folic acid and 10 micrograms of vitamin D daily.

Healthy food

For a healthy development of your baby, it is necessary to eat a varied diet and that you ingest the right nutrients. A diet that includes sufficient vitamins and minerals is also important for your own health during pregnancy. If you find it difficult to reach your daily recommended amounts, we recommend you to take a look at the website of the nutrition center for tips.

Exercise enough

Losing weight or dieting during pregnancy is strongly discouraged, but a healthy weight at the start of your pregnancy reduces the risks of complications during pregnancy and childbirth for you and your baby. Therefore, strive to have a healthy weight before becoming pregnant. A good physical condition also helps you through your pregnancy. You can continue most forms of exercise during pregnancy, as long as it feels good.

Check your medication

Do you want to get pregnant and are you taking medication? Always consult with your general practitioner or treating physician whether these medicines can be used safely during pregnancy. If necessary, you can jointly decide on a different dosage or a safer alternative.

3 things should you not do

Smoking

Smoking reduces the chance of getting pregnant because it affects both the quality of the egg cells and of the sperm cells. In addition, you have a greater chance of having a miscarriage or to have a child with growth retardation or born prematurely.

Do you want to quit smoking but are you experiencing difficulties with quitting? Check out www.rookvrijeouders.nl . and read what we can do to help you and your partner.

Drinking alcohol

Alcohol, even in small amounts, harms the development of your unborn baby. So don’t take any risks.

Fortunately, you don’t have to miss your wine. There are tasty alternatives without alcohol. Do you have trouble giving up alcohol? Ask us for help and visit www.alcoholvrijzwanger.nl .

Using drugs

Drug use before and during pregnancy can lead to all kinds of birth defects and a drug-addicted baby.

Do not hesitate to talk to us or your general practitioner about this. We want to help you.
